Our ascent of Everest, in the big picture, isn't really a big deal. For the individual climbers it is a significant personal achievement and the outreach to students and the associated science is nice, yet climbing Everest doesn't have the importance that it did in 1953. When Tenzing Norgay and Ed Hillary reached the summit on the 29th of May it marked the last terrestrial point of exploration. It was an uplifting moment for the world, coming as it did on the heels of WWII. Humans could work together, aspire to and achieve lofty goals. The summit photo of Tenzing Norgay energized the world and was motivation for the Apollo program. The image of Neil Armstrong on the moon was to my generation as powerful as Tenzing was for my parent's generation. Anything is possible. Photo borrowed from a book, my apologies. @conradclimber #oneverest #natgeo #thenorthface
