Happy birthday to #FridaKahlo, who was born #onthisday in 1907. Influenced by her Mexican heritage, personal tragedy, and progressive political beliefs, #Kahlo expressed and constructed her identity through her paintings. "I paint my own reality," she said. "I paint because I need to." To this day, she remains one of the most recognizable figures of Mexican Modernism.

@madesadeasily I asked a woman artist friend about the Frida obsession and she defensively said "well, she suffered!". Ok. Everyone suffers I said. Is that a reason to like an artist work. We live now in an age where personal aspects of an artist life seem to be what it's about. But it really isn't. There's too much self pity going on. Artist whose whole POV is defined by race or gender. Who cares??? "I'm a Chinese artist". So what? "I'm an immigrant". Ok. But your art sucks. People are so m as manipulated by such LABELS. Do what you want. Fine. By I'm interested by these artist, OVER HERE. The ones that aren't playing the Zeitgeist game.

@madesadeasily I don't believe that! There are many female artist from the 20th Century that never get much attention and are very good, like Loiuse Nevelson. I think the Frida phenomena is cult of celebrity madness. I think our culture is ruining her for many of us. Also a good degree of romanticizing going on here. Helen Frankenthaler comes to mind. I far prefer both artist. Lee Bontescu. Many great 20th century artist. I get tired of seeing portraits of Van Gogh. I really don't like her work very much and I am probably doomed for saying so.

@madesadeasily plus what does your first sentence mean? I see nothing wrong with using a descriptive label to define an artist style. It's common place whether you like the art or not. But what I find troubling in social media is a real mean spirited reaction to negative appraisals. We have to "like" everything. I normally say nothing about Kahlo for fear of repraisal. I don't think much of Basquait. And usually shy away from expressing my opinion. Somebody is going to crush me. Better to be honest with our feelings about others work.

@davidlmayhew No, I don’t really go for applying labels an artist actively rejected. If she gets a lot of coverage, it’s probably because we are so lacking in attention to women artists.

@madesadeasily Thanx. It wasn't a tirade. Just expressing an opinion. And I appreciate your concern about how I feel. My arthritis is killing me. Maybe I should do a show about it!! Ha!

@davidlmayhew She specifically said she was NOT a Surrealist. And Modern is an era — Surrealism is modern, as are Cubism, Fauvism, etc.
