In our tiny percentile of genetic differentiation is the significant and fascinating realm of our inheritance from our biological parents’ DNA codes. While less than 0.5% of our DNA holds our ancestral differentiation, it is the ethical ground on which we stand in resistance to the surrendering our genetic privacy, ownership and interpretation. In such a climate of legitimate concern about the extent to which our civil liberties have already been eroded, it is worth remembering and celebrating the 99.5% of “being human” that is benignly shared by us all. What makes our species truly unique is the elaborate systems of language and creative processes that we use to tell our passed-on ancient stories and make our deliberate marks. We make space for artists to chronicle, interpret, question and draw our attention to our human condition and the curious intricacies of the here-and-now of our willfully lived experience. We create rituals and structures that safeguard human kinship and ultimately influence the direction in which the double helix of our species purposely travels.
