One-to-one DNA sample comparisons do have legitimate, ring-fenced uses. It is the process by which paternity can be confirmed or discounted. DNA records are matched to the remains of military personnel killed in action to allow for the return of the fallen to their loved ones. For over thirty years, DNA matching has been used as criminal evidence presented at trial, and police forces across the world have rights to take DNA samples from convicted prisoners, the arrested but not convicted, and “persons of interest” with active arrest warrants - all without the prospect of a return to genetic data anonymity post- arrest or incarceration.
