@gingerdevil77 Okay... I'll play. So let's back up a bit. You honestly believe that everything was fair and equal starting in 1865? The slate was completely wiped clean and Black people were left with every resource necessary to be successful in America after 400yrs plus of slavery? Really? Reparations were being paid to the families of southern plantation owners well into the 20th century. That seems fair to you? Black people have been working and paying into a system that they could fully take part in because of government sponsored, legal racism and segregation for over 100yrs after slavery, but that also seems about right to you too huh? I am the first person in my family born with ALL of my rights as an American Citizen and I was born in the 70's. Do you really not get that we are not just talking about slavery? Land was taken from Blacks in the south, with families burned and lynched in the 20th century, and guess who lives on and owns that land now? (I'll give you a hint.) I get the knee-jerk, emotional reactions to this very sensitive topic, but come on. Just take a second to actually research and understand the other side. It's far more complex than, "That was 100yrs ago get over it."

@sdevans didnt expect you to agree and I respect your opinion/viewpoint. Never said or thought that others had it made. What I was trying to convey was white person who may have been poor during reconstruction losing a plantation, wealth or a business was still better off and further ahead of a person who was previous property. A immigrant from Europe who came through Ellis island in the 1920s penniless was still better off than the average black person in the time. Reparations to Jews in Europe weren’t extremely divisive (yes I know they were directly effected by the holocaust) the biggest issue with racial divide is ignorance. The ignorance that it doesn’t exist or isn’t as bad as it is. Think of this wonderful new women’s movement going on (IMO) to me it doesn’t make me feel bad about being male because some have abused power past and present and the fact that women are advocating change doesn’t alarm me or make me feel threatened. Many white people feel very uncomfortable and uneasy at the mention of race. I don’t know why.

@sdevans never knew that. Well I’ll be more mindful in encouraging my friends to feel free and open to dialogue on race. And to give them the space to do so without provocation or judgement. This has been a huge learning experience for me as well. My parents are Caribbean and theyve never experienced racism but they were descendants of the space trade. So I’ve had to reach out to friends in the diaspora on many things relating to navigating situations and learning about different perspectives. Many black people who’s roots are in the US from all different socio-economic backgrounds were raised being taught from a young age about how interact with police, persons of authority, white women, Etc. I say this not to cause upset but to create dialogue. Many of my white friends had no need of similar lessons. When we learn each others experiences and feel comfortable doing so i believe change will effect change. Have a good night

@hezgottahaveit I disagree with the premise of people still benefiting from slavery (I’d have to research the history on the companies you mentioned). In general, the civil war was devastating for the south. It’s ruined economy affected everyone. Today, most small towns in the south are poor because of the textile industry going overseas, and most rural areas are poor with little economic opportunity. I don’t disagree that slavery and the discrimination of the Jim crow years (both evil institutions, btw) did a lot of damage, but assuming that everybody else somehow has it made is far from the reality. Finally, I feel like all this talk about reparations is only going to divide people further. In my opinion, It’s political rhetoric that will not help anyone

@briantodd20 oh, please briantodd, enlighten me. reparations makes sense for those who were slaves...ala 40 acres and a mule. I think you are more concerned about institutionalized racism. Agreed - let's make progress on dealing with that. Let's take down confederate era symbolism. All for it. I never supported racist ideas and treat all people equally but the thought of giving someone my tax dollars because their forefathers were slaves over 125 years ago seems ridiculous. You want to change the future of black communities - vote out the grey hairs from our government. I fear, however, this tactic will do nothing but further the racial divide and drive the flyover states to the polls in droves. Get ready for another four years of trump.?
