Doesn’t this look like a ghost heart?? It’s actually a pig heart. We know that’s slightly less exciting, but the reason why it looks translucent is still pretty cool — the living cells were washed off using a soap solution, which bursts the cells and leaves only the protein structure behind. This lets the heart serve as a scaffold to grow a new working heart out of human stem cells. Believe it or not, scientists at the Texas Heart Institute have successfully implanted tissue-engineered hearts like this one into rats and pigs. Next up: humans! You can read about this and other bio-engineering experiments in the TED Book, “Super Cells.” Photo courtesy of RMR Labs, Texas Heart Institute

@love.is.vegan oh sweetie I think you mean well however on the list of elements that can cause cancer red meat is very low on the totem pole. Burnt toast is actually higher, carcinogenic, obviously smoking too. Eating lean red meat, poultry, fish, vegetables, grains and legumes is part of a healthy diet for the majority of people. Processed meat products have a greater level of cancer causing agents. I will have a look at the documentary, thank you. But what I will say is please don’t judge all medical research institutions and researchers who use animals negatively. As passionate as you are, so they are too and we really need them. I don’t want to lose another best friend to breast cancer at 38, seeing her fight for over two years and never complain she believed positivity would help heal her. I think the crystals, healing stones and all the other things she surrounded herself with made her strong and happy. For most of her life she was a vegetarian, incredibly healthy and active but as science has proven cancer does not discriminate. Research is vital for this cruel illness to be gone for good.
Being a vegan doesn’t make you immune from the reality of medical research, we need it desperately and as a woman think of the millions of women who are now immune from ovarian cancer thanks to a vaccine. Isn’t that incredible? The second highest death rate of women was ovarian cancer, now by 2026 Australia will be ovarian cancer free and we can thank the dedication of researchers, mice specifically bred and human clinical trials for fighting back against cancer and giving the vaccine to the world.

@anthecrawford First off, please do not call me sweetie. It’s condescending. I’m a 35 year-old woman, not a little girl. Secondly, what we do to animals in labs is disgusting. These animals are like children, innocent and unaware of why this is happening to them, and we take advantage. Do you know one of the most-used animals in medical and cosmetic testing is the Beagle? Do you know why? Because they are the most gentle dog. They don’t ever fight back when they’re being forced to inhale toxic fumes. Don’t you think that’s sick? If this is what we think we have to do in order to survive, then we don’t deserve to. New science shows red meat causes cancer. Poultry causes cancer. Dairy causes cancer - breast cancer, actually. But besides the cancer risk, we don’t eat animals to survive anymore. We eat them primarily for sensory pleasure. Do you think it’s okay in modern society to abuse someone, to take their life, for sensory pleasure? Is taste more important than life? Than kindness? One day soon, we will look back and be disgusted by everything we did to animals. If you don’t believe me, watch the movie Dominion, which is free online. Or Earthlings. What the Health. Cowspiracy. The question we should ask ourselves is not solely how do we survive, but who do we want to be?

@glasspoems_ (typo, sorry) attack, neither pigs nor human will do the proper surgery for the pig. Marketing new organs for human to get better is a sickening idea. Bio-Science is really taking advantage of people's sympathy, by using emotional wordings like mom, dad, baby, family...how convinient A kichi phrase hooligans yelling out 'PRO LIFE!!!!' but their teeny weeny bumper sticker says, 'only for myself, bi*tch.' I feel, somehow, eating a porkchop and stealing a heart from an animal is the same, yet two very different thing. Both are very painful process to the animals and humans altogether (think of butchering) but stealing heart is a beyond matter. When you finish one plate of meat and it's gone. But this transplant thing is, you are making the utmost use out of this animal by gearing it to the most, like you can enslave other's life (in this case animals life), another era of slavery, but you are getting by the guilt under the flag of science. Because science labs are not telling much to the world of WHAT IS REALLY GOING ON IN THE LAB.

I totally Green with all of those comments that are opposed to the inhumane way we treat animals. Anyone who has owned a cat or a dog knows that animals are aware and feel. Look at dogs that have been poorly treated how their personality becomes fearful and mistrusting. You can see it in their eyes. The conditions we farm animals in is inhumane. They shouldn't be kept in small spaces they should be allowed the space to wander in and live like a pig or cattle should. I hate intensive caged farming its just greed.

Awww a piece of beautiful beacon died to save thousands of lives. Anyone who says bullshit about the poor pork chop that died obviously has never watched a 61 day old infant die because he was born with massive heart defect. Your stupid and will never win. Pigs are food rats are scavengers. Here wait one moment while I eat beacon and spread some rat poison to save a life. I hope desperately this offends you and peta. If you have something to say. Tell it to my brother and his wife who lost their child.

I cant help but to feel hopeless for humanity after reading countless comments that against the idea of transplanting heart to save human’s lives. Imagine if the one that needs that heart transplant is yourself or your loved ones. Would you be that quick to reject this solution? Scientists are giving tangible effort to solve one of the greatest world issues - and all you can do is to comment on this post ??
