Photo by @stephen_matera | The wind blows sand across Great Sand Dunes National Park at sunset in Colorado. The area receives only 11 inches of precipitation each year and was measured to be the quietest of the U.S. National Parks in the contiguous 48 states. Sand temperatures can reach a blistering 140 degrees Fahrenheit during hot summer days and dunes are up to 750 feet high. Follow me, @stephen_matera, to see a video of the sand blowing and for more images like this from Colorado and around the world. #desert #colorado

I love the dunes. At this time (during peak melting of the snowpack) every year, there is a wide, very shallow river flowing past the base of the dunes, perfect for skimboarding or just splashing around on a hot summer day. Good luck finding a campsite though..
