#WorkoftheWeek is Nan Goldin’s Jimmy Paulette after the Parade, NYC, 1991. It’s one of a large series of colour photographs of glamorous drag queens taken in New York, Paris and Berlin in 1991.
Goldin first encountered drag queens in 1972 and quickly became obsessed. 'I was eighteen and felt like I was a queen too... they became my whole world. Part of my worship of them involved photographing them.'

@a.v.morgan9 i was interested to read your views, and am glad if I am wrong. I feel sometimes that we gravitate to these images that are a bit sad and find that I always see a similar take on drag queens. I wish I could see photos of marginalized people doing general happy things - it feels like it would normalize everything instead of keeping certain people on the fringe - to be considered an obviously normal part of societal fabric - instead of being singled out for certain proclivities ( but perhaps that's what is wanted in a foto). I was out at dinner the other night and a group of people walked in and sat down , one of whom was a d.q. and dressed to the nines , but happy with a group of people who were not all dressed up and it made me so happy to see that this was the most normal thing in the world.... HOPEFULLY it means things are changing - anyway i do thank you for sharing your thoughts and knowledge with me

@dagnybock i don’t think exploitation was Goldin’s intention. She worked with the people she photographed & to the best of my knowledge ( art history was a long time ago) they were happy to work with her. She also documented herself after a dreadful beating-Black eyes & all. It made me cringe from the rawness & painful issues it raised ( woman as punching-bag) She didn’t shy away from the ugly or unpleasant. Like you I thought the image was beautiful & it does capture the vulnerability of the ‘sitter’. It was a time when homophobia was rife & beatings were the norm. Sad disgusting times

I found Nan Golding exhibition by chance, getting off the other exhibition at Tate, and I liked it so much. I specially recommend the movie she made with her pictures and the music, telling the story.

Nan Goldin’s work made me want to be a photographer. Her work always captures the character and humanity of her subjects.

There is something very vulnerable about the person in that lovely photo.
