Russian artist Natalia Goncharova was well-known during her lifetime, but this fame didn’t come without its controversy. A number of her works were censored, including this work ‘The Deity of Fertility’ 1909 which was confiscated by the police. The artist was charged with publicly displaying ‘corrupting’ images, as the female nude was only considered an appropriate subject for male artists. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Find out more about the life, career and controversies of #NataliaGoncharova in today’s story. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

@lucabalduini sorry here you are:- "I vhave decided not to go to see the marvellous Natalia Goncharova exhibition at Tate Modern after checking the sponsorship list because 'LetterOne' - now part of a huge pan European conglomerate called Wintershall DEA - is the main sponsor. An oil and gas company that fracks for natural gas and which fired a huge number of German employees early this year because Germany does not 'socially' support fracking for gas, unlike the UK and other less environmentallly sound or ethical countries. "In September 2018, L1 Energy and BASF signed an agreement to merge their oil and gas businesses and create Wintershall DEA. Wintershall DEA will be the largest independent European exploration and production company, with activity in 12 countries across Europe, Latin America, North Africa, and the Middle East. The combined business would have had pro forma production of approximately 590,000 barrels of oil equivalent per day in 2018, almost 70% of which comes from natural gas. Production is expected to rise to around 800,000 barrels of oil equivalent per day in the early 2020s as the company executes its business plan." from https://letterone.com (see" L1 Energy: Completing a landmark merger" - no direct link available) and info about the background to the merger:https://www.tellerreport.com/news/--after-merger--wintershall-dea-deletes-800-jobs-in-germany-.HJxxd7r3rN.html "

@natalia.astankina.art hi Goncharova died many years ago. She was a revolutionary as well as an artist. I just copied my FB post to the other person who asked me the same thing so you can see info about the sponsors LetterOne. It's on the exhibition info on the Tate website too. I saw the name and then just did abit of research. Tate has been sponsored by BP before too. I don't think living artists would choose sponsors like that. It's very unethical in my book

@eleanorlake19 I understand your point but boycotting an art exhibition does not affect LetterOne in any way in my opinion. The art world is full of controversial patrons/sponsors - from banks to fashion companies - so following your line of reasoning we should boycott every single art exhibition.

I read these things and I just cannot understand what goes on in the minds of the collective conscious. It’s so strange the way people are offended or perceive right and wrong. Seems like such a simple thing to grasp but the whole world doesn’t seem to have a clue

@eleanorlake19 I understand that she’s dead. If they didn’t sponsor her exhibition, I’d never knew about her art. I don’t care who’s sponsoring. This’s good for the mass.

If she knew who was sponsoring this exhibition of her beautiful work she would have said no thanks and lots more besides. I love her work, always have but am boycotting.
