This Richard Avedon photograph features three history-making astronauts, but they're not the Apollo 11 astronauts. Do you know who they are? 👩🚀 👩🚀 👩🚀 It's Gus Grissom, Alan Shepard, and John Glenn! They were three of the astronauts involved in Project Mercury, America's first man-in-space program.
Swipe ➡️ for Avedon’s solo shot of Alan Shepard. In May 1961, Shepard became the first American in space.
Gus Grissom followed Shepard, launched into suborbital flight in July 1961. He later became the first NASA astronaut to fly into space twice.
In February 1962, John Glenn (right) became the first American to orbit the Earth. Swipe ➡️➡️ to see a button commemorating the event.

Mercury 7 Astronauts were the first selected to go to space. Only Alan Shepherd, the very first American in space did a later flight to the moon on an Apollo mission. Gus Grissom was selected as a part of the first mission to the moon on Apollo 1, but died in the first launch pad test when a fire broke out in the crew capsule. The other two crew, Roger Chaffee and Edward White also perished. It was a severe blow to America’s space program but dedication and perseverance prevailed.

I’m a big history fan so tonight when I was speaking with my parents they started to talk about the lunar landing. I told them there’s a small part of me that’s envious they got to experience this. I can’t begin to imagine the emotions felt by the world as they watched science science fiction become science fact. It seems like truly awe inspiring events like this don’t happen anymore.

I love these pictures but I feel it was remiss not to mention Gus Grissom was the commander of Apollo 1 who sadly perished with fellow astronauts Ed White and Roger Chaffee in a 1967 prelaunch test. It took great courage for NASA and it’s astronauts to continue their endeavors.

What a great photograph! I remember these astronauts when I was barely in junior high school. I was always in space and space travel, especially when our family would travel through the AZ Desert at night and stop to look up!!🌙⭐️
