It's simply unbelievable that the people of Greece have no say over their own archaeology. This is the Tomb Of Helen Of Troy some 3200 years old. It is sitting abandoned & gated off, exposed to the elements & covered in trees with roots systems damaging potentially important stoneworks & weeds making it look like a dump yard rather than tomb of a very significant historical figure behind the TrojanWars. Helen of Troy was regarded as the most beautiful woman that ever lived & the saga surrounding her two lovers recently became a Hollywood blockbuster. Because of British controls over Archaeological sites in Greece the local Greek people cannot even take care of the crudely fenced off tomb let alone use it for tourism & raise money for the struggling local community. One local school which over centuries has averaged five hundred students now has only six because of many the families forced to leave the area because of the financial crisis. How many people reading this have seen the movie Troy & how many, if visiting Sparta, would visit the Tomb Of Helen of Troy. The economics if you proposed just 1000 visitors a day, spending €100 a day whilst staying in Sparta would accumulate €3,650,000. It would certainly employ locals & improve much needed pride of place. Can anyone please help address this issue!!?? Something so special that interests so many globally & can benefit all, helping to alleviate pressures felt by the struggling local economy here in Sparta. lyricallove88 That is sad. Someone else having say over your land, your world. I'd visit the tomb, I've always been fascinated with mythology and learning about the world before us. I hope you raising awareness is successful, and change comes for them to protect such a treasured and historical piece of their history. sabineloch I've seen the movie several times, and even more often I read the legend, one of my all time favourites. Planning my next visit to Greece for 2020, unfortunately Sparta will then be too far away, but I am sure I will come back. So sad to hear that Helena's tomb is not properly cared for :(

toriesalt I remember when I visited Sparti awhile back how depressing it seemed and now I understand why - I’m Greek and I didn’t even know about this. Things need to change and I will be raising my hand to help as well ⚔️

dimimaki @manubennett My dad grew up less than 2 minutes from here.This is so very sad. I did not know the British archaeological society had any control. My sister thinks the King of Sparta is buried near by as well.
