“Rethinking the Modern Monument” explores the original contexts of Auguste Rodin’s sculptures as public monuments, many of which still stand in cities across France today. #Rodin originally created “Call to Arms” for a competition in Paris, which he lost. Decades later, he resubmitted the design as a memorial in the town of Verdun, the site of longest and bloodiest battle of World War I. The imposing statue can still be seen there. The version at the #RodinMuseum is a miniature model.
