20 years ago, Rob Sheffield attended the disaster that was Woodstock '99 and came back with an incredible opening line: "As the flames climbed high into the night, to moonlight the sacrificial rite, I saw Kid Rock laughing with delight." Michael Lang $20.00 gallon of water, porta potties leaking everywhere first day, ATMs with no cash, no clean water no money for food,(I'm 57) human mind can only stand so much. 95 degree + heat no water. I was there five days. Again Michael Lang is responsible for his concert. Mosh pit of 50,000 your going to find more than a few assholes. If you were groped or worse that sucks BUT body surfing over that size of a pit bad shit WILL happen. Never saw anyone chasing down girls. AND the raves in airplane hanger were off the hook! By Sunday kids were hungry and dying of thirst. Enter assholes working for Lang selling water $5.00 a bottle $20.00 a gallon. The riot could be seen coming. RATM ruled! that and Willie and setzer! Love that the media blamed limp biscuit but the fires grew by 10x when RHCP played FIRE. Michael Lang gets a pass. BULLSHIT!!!

What an awesome, accurate read. Except the water was $6 per bottle. My husband and I describe it as the best/worst of times. By Friday night we were noticing very aggressive young males purposefully wrecking stuff and harassing young women as they walked by. Tons of drunken shirtless young American men screaming “Give me some pussy, I want some pussy”. Grabbing at girls. LOTS of them. Very aggressive. It was weird. We attended a music festival in Ontario shortly before this which was a wonderful event. Well organized and clean. Very pleasant. Then We drove down specifically to see the Tragically Hip play Woodstock 99 and got booed repeatedly for waving a Canadian flag during the Hip’s set. Young men screamed “This is America” at us. Indeed.

I went. People were fed up with unsanitary conditions, the heat, and paying out the ass for food and water. Sadly, this served as a template for how far a venue/promoter can gouge people versus how little they will provide people in return. They found the rebellion point in the equation. Also, distributing 10,000 lit candles before the Red Hot Chili Peppers set didn’t help.

Well that is the crappiest opening line because that lyric wasn’t written about Woodstock in the first place. Don McLean wrote that lyric about the Altamont Speedway Concert where The Rolling Stones played and where people actually died as opposed to Woodstock where everyone did a lot of drugs. It’s a false comparison between generations and I wholly resent it.

I so clearly remember hearing about it the next day on my radio. I was thinking about the irony of what Woodstock was and intended to be in 1969 to what it had become 30 years later. Water bottles were $6 a pop, the port-a potty’s clogged up and stoped working, it was blazing hot, and everything you needed cost money.

My brother was here and said it was fucked up. Bad planning of the band lineup was a contributing factor, never mind the assault of women attending. My brother stayed as long as he felt safe and climbed fencing near the stage to get out when the fires got out of hand.
