Kyle 'Bugha' Giersdorf, 16, took home the solo win at the first-ever Fortnite World Cup, earning a cool $3 million as champion. It's the largest-ever payout for a single player in an esports tournament. "Everything I've done in the grind has all paid off and it's just insane," he said. The gaming tournament took place in New York's Arthur Ashe tennis stadium, and more than a million viewers watched online. Guys, this is not stupid, this is business.
Its like the winner takes all logic, everyone contributes a little, so losers only lose a little, and the winner earn alot more than what he contributed.
Fortnite already has a big name, with so much participants, making it a grand championship, it gained so much attention that the event holder and Fortnite definitely earning ALOT from this event from ads and stuff.
By giving 3 Mill as price (which is probably only a small small proportion of their profit from this) is only a gimmick to gain them even more attention, to potentially earn even more. So it is not like "Wow they are giving out so much", it is more like "Wow they are probably earning so much to give away 3 Mill!"
P.S. Fortnite is one of the biggest game now, to be able to win a World championship like this is ridiculously hard. He definitely trained really really hard to a point it is no longer fun to most people anymore.
P.P.S. But haters' gonna hate anyway~

@nc_jack it is true professional sports players get an absurd amount of money, but sports is different than video games. Sports bring out the best in a person through determination, effort, blood, sweat, and tears with pure dedication. Video games does not bring out the maturity in a person as much as sports do nor does it have the same amount of seriousness and intensity. Not hating for the kid for winning but 3 million is just way too much for something like that.

@nc_jack no its not a waist. I'm happy for him. I just read like 50 comments all saying ..."see playing video games is a great idea you can make millions". I was just saying that its such a small number of people who can actually make a living playing video games in tournaments. Hundreds of millions of people play games and only a handful of people will make a significant amount of money.

@jared_theasian I respect the player as much as I do any sports player. They work as hard, train as hard, and prepare as much as any other athlete. I'm not the only one who thinks so. Many athletes such as Rick fox are huge supporters of esports. If you have an issue with a waste of money on competition, don't only look at esports.

"everything I've done in the grind" the game came out 2 years ago... He doesn't know what a grind is. He was just a 14 year kid with WAY too much time on his hands. And he's about to have a LOT more time on his hands now too. Ya really hate to see it.

@nc_jack so you are seriously comparing a video game to an athlete, there is a clear difference between the two whether it's on maturity, dedication, or hard work. Again not hating, but 3 million over a video game is just way too much.
