On July 29, 1878, Etienne Léopold Trouvelot observed this total solar eclipse in Creston in the Wyoming Territory. 🌑☀️🌑 Both an artist and a scientist, Trouvelot was among many in the 19th century who created graphic interpretations of the sun's eclipse by the moon, striving not merely to make a detailed record to assist astronomers, but also to capture something of the sublimity of celestial bodies.
See this and more lunar images by Trouvelot's contemporaries in "Apollo's Muse: The Moon in the Age of Photography," on view through September 22. #MetApollosMuse #Apollo50
