Today, during the day I was on location shooting my short film near the nuclear power plant in Fukushima and in the early evening I went to a gathering to honor Yasuhiro Wakashima @modelkingdom and Hiroshi Sagae, both otaku sculptors, in their lifetime. Hiroshi Sagae #寒河江弘 unfortunately could not attend due to sudden illness.
The two are both suffering from cancer and the party was planned by Shuichi Miyawaki @sennmusann , the president of Kaiyodo @kaiyodo_pr , in order to encourage them while they are still well.
Mr. Wakashima developed cancer in the ocular fundus in the skull five years ago and, after its removal, was long battling for recovery. A few months ago, I heard, he had a contusion on the skull supporting the brain and had a surgery to secure the brain with titanium and a muscle from his thigh. I couldn’t begin to wrap my head around all this but he seemed very much recovered and well today, leaving me in awe of modern medicine.
I had the pleasure of working with them both: Mr. Wakashima had made my life-size figure sculpture, SMPKo2, and Mr. Sagae had created models for some of my 500 Arhats figures.
It’s rough to see us first-generation otaku age and drop right and left. Yet we are the kind of people whose minds are happily filled with otaku worldview even as we fall to illness, so there’s something tremendous about that.
Mr. Wakashima, Mr. Sagae, please do take care and live long.
本日は昼間は福島の原発界隈でムービーの撮影をして、夕方は、オタクの造形師、若島廉弘 AKA 東海村源八さん @modelkingdom さん、寒河江弘さんらお二人を存命中に讃える会に参加しました。寒河江弘さんは急遽具合が悪くなって不参加との事。
お二人とも癌を患っており、元気なうちに皆んなで元気付けようと、海洋堂 @kaiyodo_pr の社長、宮脇修一 @sennmusann さんが企画したパーティでした。
若島さんは5年前、頭蓋骨の眼底に癌が出来て、その摘出、闘病で、苦しんでおられましたが、数ヶ月前に、脳を支える頭蓋骨が座礁し、チタンと足の太ももの腱で、脳を支える手術をしたとの事で、聞いてても手術の内容がわからなかったのですが、とても元気になられていて、現代医学の進歩に驚いていた次第。
その若島さんはSMPKO2という等身大フィギュアを作ってくれて、寒河江さんは五百羅漢を造形してくださったご縁。
オタク第1世代も歳をとり、バタバタと倒れていっており、なかなか辛いものがありますな。しかし、こうして病に倒れても頭の中はオタクの世界観でバラ色という人種！物凄いものがありますな。
若島さん、寒河江さん、養生して、長生きしてください。
