Literary giant James Baldwin was born on this day in 1924. In late October of 1968, seven months after the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Baldwin delivered a powerful tribute at The Museum of Modern Art’s memorial evening coinciding with a benefit exhibition for the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, the civil rights organization of which Dr. King had served as president from 1957 until his death.
