Io gioco con gli opposti.
A reflection on identity and representation by model @louschoof in an article by #SofiaMattioli.
“When ‘selfie’ became word of the year in 2013 I found it less interesting than ‘portrait,” says Lou Schoof, 24, a German model who reflects on identity and representation in our August Issue. This time, however, the perspective is different. In the images shot specifically for this issue of #VogueItalia, Schoof is both the subject and the probing lens. For these self-portraits, she worked hard to avoid the screen before shooting her face, light eyes, and deconstructed blonde bob. “It can make you disguise the details,” she explains. She grew up in northern Germany “immersed in nature” among thick forests and sand dunes, and was discovered by an agent on a train to Hamburg. On her Instagram, she posts images of herself inspired by the idea of the female gaze. ‘A self-portrait is what you feel or are. Even a selfie can show something, though it is often a disguise aimed at getting approval from others. A way to break free from constraints and not seek approval or think about who will see the images. Even compliments can be a trap.’ #LouSchoof
