Barneys filed for bankruptcy on Monday after weeks of rumors, leaks and speculation. "Barneys put itself up on a precisely buffed onyx pedestal it built for itself, and it turned out everyone was just waiting to knock it off," wrote Vanessa Friedman, The New York Times's fashion director, on the rise and fall of the fabled department store. I’m a l’il torn — while I’ve appreciated the merch Barneys had on offer, as a man of color I’ve never felt particularly welcomed or valued in their stores. Of course that vibe has shifted on occasion as soon as you go to actually make and purchase and then it’s like “oh! Black Man with some money to spend!”—but even then it was a guilty pleasure, like I was an undesirable and unwelcome UNTIL I was ready to buy. It’s a love/hate thing for me, I guess — same as it likely is for many persons of color like me who love fashion but must sometimes suffer the indignities that come from the perceived crime of being a person of color. Upper tier fashion folk can and will be “judgey”, about the clothes you’re wearing AND the hue of your skin. #facts #invisibleman

@mama.cookie.monster the closing of the NYC was the dumbest thing eva but the leadership needed the money and sacrificed the sales revenue of that store. I forgot about the american dream mall. Which I thought was not such a good idea with the state of malls and customer traffic in malls. Retail is tough and of you dont change with the climate, you will die. As barneys, LT, Jcpenney, Sears, and others are facing.

Titillating! I've found that the stores that were slow, begrudgingly adopting an e-commerce presence were always going to end up here. They think the exclusivity of waking in their stores is valued more than the products we desire. They're oh so wrong. A little down-market, but Bloomingdale's is next IMO.

what’s sad is the internet culture of hate and hating when people don’t win. barneys NY is an institution that taught fashion to almost everyone on this page. Wish them the best of luck w new beginnings 🖤

Such a shame. WAKE UP PEOPLE BUY IN STORE NOT ONLINE VISIT AND SPEAK TO AN EXPERT OR you can have an online chat with an autobot. And that is retail progress? Please.
