Happy birthday to the California "Beat generation" collage artist and painter Jess, who is known for "paste-ups" such as this one that often take years to produce. Utilizing hundreds of images from books, old magazines, steel engravings, newspapers, etc., his works frequently contain references to mythology, the occult, or the divining powers of the tarot, the ancient fortune-telling cards. See the details in this work in "The Art of Collage and Assemblage."

The photo does not show the scale of the piece. It’s five to six feet high, or seems to be. Standing near it, one falls into detail after detail in layer after layer. It’s an amazing work.

This show is an unexpected treasure! Visited the museum last weekend to see Gee's Bend quilts and savored both exhibitions. Had no idea the collage show was even up...
