He hired workmen to chisel this church out of solid stone, starting with the surface of the roof at ground level, then carving down the outside of the walls, then tunneling in to make the windows. Once inside they carved up to the roof, down to the floor, and then out through the ground level doors. The church is now accessed through the stone stairway at right.
