Fossils have revealed that the world’s largest parrot, which was over 3 feet tall and weighed more than 15 pounds, lived in New Zealand 19 million years ago. The fossils were found in Central Otago, New Zealand, and indicate that this parrot was twice the size of the New Zealand kakapo, a hefty, flightless bird once believed to be the largest ever to roam the Earth. "New Zealand is well known for its giant birds," said Trevor Worthy, who authored a study on the prehistoric bird, named Heracles inexpectatus in honor of its Herculean size and strength. “But until now, no one has ever found an extinct giant parrot —anywhere.” (📸: Dr. Brian Choo/Flinders University)
