Want to learn and adventure at the same time? Canyons of the Ancients National Monument has some of the highest densities of archaeological sites in North America. The monument protects an abundance of well-preserved evidence of native cultures reflecting many aspects of past human life. From villages, cliff dwellings and field houses to sacred springs, agricultural fields and #petroglyphs - the area is incredible to explore. Be sure to stop first at the Anasazi Heritage Center (Monument headquarters) in #Colorado for maps, guidebooks, current information about trail and road conditions and general orientation. @usinterior the BLM Anasazi Heritage Center changed names over a year ago to BLM Canyons of the Ancients Visitor Center and Museum. We encourage visitors to stop there on the way to the 177,000+ acre monument to get current info on access points and road conditions on the monument, and visit the museum exhibits on Ancestral Puebloan culture. Thanks!

Just happened by a week ago and made an impromptu stop; the visitors center was unassuming but you could tell people were working to take care of it and tell the stories! The visitors trail was also SO well labeled with information about the plants and how they have been used! 🌱

I have been there. One of the most unassuming parks/monuments in the park system, not developed at all beyond trails which is, for me, a big part of its charm. See nearby Hovenweep if you go here.

I thought that the indigenous peoples from that area no longer liked the word Anasazi as it means old ones

Pretty sure there is no access to Painted Hand Pueblo currently. The road is closed until further notice.
