@bryndizzleb I'm not conflating the two things. My point is that the very existence of intersex people means that to define who is and isn't a certain sex, you need to either make arbitrary cutoffs of who makes the cut into being "man/woman enough" or accept that there is a gray area. Once you do that, I think you have to bend over backwards to try to meaninfully tie someone's gender (a social construct) with their sex (a body categorization) in an immutable and prescriptive way. I keep talking about bodies because that seemed to be your focus, like how you facetiously accused me of believing in transubstantiation because I think people can choose their gender, but my whole point is that biological sex =/= gender to begin with.

Here's another excerpt: "Today the problem is too much information from too many sources, with a resulting plague of fragmentation and division—not excessive authority but its disappearance, which leaves ordinary people to work out the facts for themselves, at the mercy of their own prejudices and delusions." I'm ok with that. Art that attempts to be politically or socially "correct" is seldom any good. But art produced for the shear joy of making it can be great regardless of what any body thinks or says about it.

Huge, HUGE, problem, of which the comments here are indicative. As if you can’t think this and be against the authoritarian right. In fact, a case could be made that having a perception of “right art” built around such categories encourages manichean competition to define those terms and reactions to it. It’s also and for art because you end up with propaganda over exploration. Wrote about this and granting system here: https://quillette.com/2018/09/30/the-implosion-of-canadas-music-industry/

@richaod "Orwellian" means state-mandated, top-down authoritarianism. There's no such thing as "grassroots community thought police". It's inherently impossible. Even phenomena like the Red Guards in China were still an arm of the state and their propaganda wing, cops by any other name.
Anyway, if you're going to engage with critiques of the left, do it from within, instead of buying into libertarian/conservative straw men talking points. Think MORE critically!

@seizedman i'm not making an argument about the subject matter. I actually agree with what it says. My comment is about the intensity of emotion in your reaction. To you it's awesome that she was wrong about how she expected annie to have similar views to hers. I see it as rather benign. The way i see it you would have to bitter towards mainstream liberals to get a kick out of their errors.

This is great! It’s important to note that “left wing” woke cultural policing contradicts socialist politics, which is concerned with material conditions, not idealist conformism. The left’s inability to achieve political power is sublimated into futile cultural games. They are easy to profit off of, divide the left, and produce bad art.
