Kamon, or family crests, are everywhere in Kyoto. These dignified intricate designs adorn a myriad of items including noren, temple roofs, clothing, furniture and even sweets! They are thought to have originated over 1,000 years ago to identify the nobility’s ox carriages at the Imperial Palace. In the 16th century, the crests were used by the samurai class to distinguish between warring parties on the battlefield. Also adopted by merchants, their use spread to the general population about a century ago. Handed down through generations, kamon carry the hopes of ancestors and over time have inspired thousands of motifs. Today, artisans are working to keep this intricate skill alive, with kamon being modernized and reimagined for future generations.
