The digital tokens will only be issued by the People’s Bank of China and commercial banks.⁠

But Blockchain, which is a ledger technology that underpins cryptocurrencies like bitcoin, won’t be relied upon exclusively for the new digital currency.⁠

“Personally, I’m still struggling to understand the advantage of this over the current system,” one expert said.⁠
