Happy 60th birthday to #FrancisAls! The Belgian artist, who has been living and working in Mexico City since the 1980s, often collaborates with commercial street sign painters (rotulistas) to make enlarged reproductions of his works.
In this work, #rotulistas copied Alÿs’s compositions of two slim men wearing gray suits, one of them hiding his face behind the flap of the other man’s jacket.
With its repetition of the same picture by multiple authors, the group questions the idea of the unique and original art object, and by extension, the role of the artist, whom Alÿs ironically terms "the liar."
Taken together, the paintings challenge established values about the nature of works of art and the production and consumption of images in the contemporary world.
