The gardenia flower on this fine underglaze-blue and yellow-enameled ‘Gardenia’ dish from the Zhengde Mark and Period is known for its distinctive fragrance popular among ladies who wore branches of gardenia in their hair. Used for their medical benefits, along with flavoring tea and preparing cosmetics, the small fruits of the plant were also coveted for dyeing to produce a fine yellow or orange color.
