Photo by Daisy Gilardini @daisygilardini | Have you ever wondered why some color images stand out more than others? It has to do with the combination of colors in your picture. Complementary colors—the opposites on the color wheel, such as red and green, blue and orange, yellow and purple—stand out and vibrate because they create strong contrast.
A good exercise is to go out in the street and try to shoot complementary colors. By learning what to look for and incorporating these elements into your composition, you will make images that immediately pop out.
In the polar regions, one of the most effective examples of how complementary colors make images more vibrant appears when shooting an iceberg, like this one in Antarctica, at sunset or sunrise.
