By now they have been harvested. Like many farmers in the American Midwest, Ben Riensche grows soybeans (in rotation with corn) because it is high-value protein and it is good for his soil. The legume, which came to Iowa from East Asia, is popular with farmers because it contributes to nitrogen fixation, thus reducing the need for artificial fertilizers.
