So something extraordinary happened for me this last weekend. My friends traveled from all over the states to Vancouver so that we could gather together for the first time in over twenty years. These girls, well women now, have been my friends for that long. Our connections first bloomed in church pews and Sunday school and on youth trips. It expanded and evolved and enveloped me right in time to save me from the often lonely, always confusing and regularly unkind middle and high school years. We were a force. The six of us. We pushed and pulled and cheered and carried each other. We laughed more than we cried but we cried some too. We took care of each other in the way that only a sisterhood can. We drifted over the years. Some of us more than others. Me probably most of all. I no longer share church pews with these beautiful women but we have found our way back to each other just the same. The grace. The magic of it is, we are just as we were these many years later. The ease, the love, the support, the laughter comes as effortlessly now as it did then. These women, then and now, have lifted me up. Restored my faith. Made me laugh. Wiped my tears. Held me. Sheltered me. Protected and supported me. They have loved me. Just as I was. Just as I am. And I love them too. Just as they were. Just as they are. I forgot...what it felt like to be a part of a tribe. I am so deeply deeply grateful that I remember now. It seems fitting that as I film #fireflylane a beautiful story of enduring unbreakable friendship, that I leave you with a quote from the book. “Best friends forever. They'd believed it would last, that vow, that someday they'd be old women, sitting in their rocking chairs on a creaking deck, talking about the times of their lives, and laughing...”
