Photos by Babak Tafreshi @babaktafreshi | I was recently in Chile's Atacama Desert working on a project under an amazing sky, one of the darkest night skies on the planet. This is a telephoto close-up of the Southern Cross, the smallest constellation but the most iconic to Southern Hemisphere nations—it even appears on several countries' flags. The large dark nebula called Coalsack sits next to it. While details in this single three-minute exposure (on a star-tracking mount) go far beyond what can be seen by the naked eye, swipe to the next photo, to a wide-angle view, with the cross location annotated. This shows what you can see under such a dark southern sky with your own eyes, but not the colors. Our eyes are almost colorblind at dark, but still we can see the Milky Way incredibly.
