The shows tell dynamic stories from myth and legend, and are accompanied by gamelan orchestral music. We know that the masks were new when they were acquired by British colonial official Sir Stamford Raffles because they are unused – it is likely that he purchased them or received them as gifts. Experts at the Museum are studying the objects stylistically to determine where on the island they originated, aiming to shed more light on collecting and colonialism in this part of the world.
