About the project - ‘These photographs were taken in August 2019 at the Sunburst Convention of Celebrity Impersonators, an annual event organized by the Thompson’s - a family of tribute artists. Taking place within the convention center of the Florida Mall, which stands between DisneyWorld and the Florida Turnpike, the event attracts impersonators nationwide to network and perform for their peers, as well as potential talent buyers. The communal energy this year, however, felt notably different from prior years. Hurricane Dorian was expected to make landfall in central Florida. Dorian’s arrival naturally subdued the otherwise celebratory energy surrounding the Convention. Only the most dedicated tribute artists were willing to travel into what could easily become the eye of the storm to attend. I mostly photographed the impersonators in the audience, watching each other perform, or in the long hallway which connected the various rooms that made up the convention center. There were four Marilyn’s this year, including Mattisen Thompson, daughter of Greg and Jackie Thompson, the convention organizers. She was a stand out, so I asked her to sit in the background when I took my favorite photograph of three of the Marilyn’s posing next to a frosted glass window, in front of a sign that indicates the direction of the restrooms (down the hall). I love that the intrinsically beautiful light is at odds with the plainness of the setting, that, without effort, it renders the campy glamor of the women softly and tastefully.
