During a strong La Niña season in 1998-99, this area broke the world record for snowfall in a single season at an astounding 1,140 inches, or 95 feet! The area averages annual snowfall of 680 inches, which helps sustain over 300 active glaciers in the North Cascades. There are very few roads that penetrate the North Cascades, but one of the few that does is the North Cascades Highway. It is closed in winter because of the deep snowfall and avalanche hazards along the road.
