This untapped resource has the potential to provide safe and clean renewable energy, yet geothermal power currently contributes to just 0.25% of Japan's electricity supply. One obstacle was that 80% of the most suitable reservoirs are located in national parks. With post-3/11 fears surrounding nuclear power and the massive cost of importing fossil fuels, some of these restrictions were removed in 2012, and the government has begun surveys to find suitable spots for development. However, there remains another obstacle in the form of the Japan Spa Association. Owners of Japan's famed baths and pools fear geothermal plants will use up all of the hot water. There is no scientific basis to support this theory; likewise, there is no evidence to disprove it. Like many things in this amazing country, the situation hangs in a state of frustrating bureaucratic limbo. In a further twist of irony, Japanese technology dominates the market with Toshiba, Mitsubishi and Fuji Electric supply 70% of the world's geothermal turbines.
