Hanksville was first settled in the late 1800s and was a supply post for Butch Cassidy's Wild Bunch gang, who would hide out at nearby Robbers Roost Canyon. The surrounding area is a nearly six-million-acre wilderness that was the last in the lower 48 to be mapped by the USGS.
