Irishman Carey was brought to United at the age of 17, scouted by Louis Rocca. The Dubliner was 18 years and seven months old when he made the progression to the United first team for the first time, against Southampton on 25 September 1937. After establishing himself in the senior side and making 53 appearances in two pre-War campaigns, the conflict then robbed him of seven seasons. By the time restarted in 1946/47, Carey was aged 27-and-a-half. However, he made the most of the next seven seasons to such a degree that by the time he bowed out at the end of 1952/53, he'd earned 344 United appearances (at the time, fourth in the club's all-time list), the club captaincy, an FA Cup, a league title and the reverential moniker 'Gentleman John'. He also had the distinction of having played every position other than left wing for the club (yes, even in goal). Also worthy of a mention from the class of the 1930s is Stan Pearson, the Salford-born striker who joined United on amateur terms at 16 having played for Adelphi Lads' Club. Pearson's career closely matched of Carey, making his debut at a similar age (18 years and 10 months) shortly after Carey, playing his final Reds game a few months after him and finishing up on 343 appearances, just one short of the Irishman. There was certainly a difference in the goals figures, however — forward Pearson was an ace marksman who netted 148 United goals, third-ever behind Jack Rowley and Joe Spence at the time.」12月17日 22時00分 - manchesterunited
