Arguably the biggest stalwart among the crop of United youth products to make first-team debuts during the 1940s was John Aston.

Making his first-team debut aged 25 due to the war, despite having been at the club since a junior and turning pro in December 1939, the Mancunian forged a formidable partnership with Johnny Carey and amassed 284 Reds appearances before retiring in 1954 (scoring his 30th and final United goal in his farewell appearance, against Sheffield United on the last day of the 1953/54 season).
