Antarctica is one of my favorite locations for ice photography. Icebergs form when ice calves from glaciers. Snow accumulates on top of a glacier and is compressed over time by new precipitation. The surface snow contains a lot of air, which reflects visible light—light we perceive as being white in color. After thousands of years of compression, the tiny air bubbles in the snow become squeezed. When the light hits the compressed ice, instead of bouncing back, it's partially absorbed. The ice absorbs longer color wavelengths, such as red and yellow, reflecting the blue and green that are visible to our eyes.
