Photo by Cristina Mittermeier @Cristina Mittermeier | After school, the kids of the Hawaiian town of Mãkaha spend their afternoons at the beach, surfing and hanging out with family and friends. They jump in the small waves, surf the big ones, or play with a “kendama,” a Japanese toy. Known as "bolero" in my home country of Mexico, kendama is a fun game that promotes competition, hand-eye coordination, and quick reflexes to avoid the occasional bump to the head. Who could ask for a better playground?
