Almost the entire village participates in the tradition in some way, from hunting and camping out on the sea ice to helping process and prepare thousands of pounds of precious meat that will feed the entire community for the year to come. This ancient practice is now being threatened by climate change in a number of ways. It has become increasingly dangerous to travel and camp on sea ice as more and more of it melts every year. Another example is storage. Hunted foods can only feed the community during the long winter months if they are properly stored, which traditionally has been done in ice cellars—generations-old massive freezers dug deep into the permafrost. As permafrost thaws, it is wreaking havoc, melting what used to be permanently frozen ground and destroying and flooding many ice cellars. Others have warmed up to a point that they are unusable, spoiling whale meat and other crucial hunted foods.
