Photos by @renaeffendiphoto | The al-Hol refugee camp, in northeastern Syria, houses about 70,000 people, mostly wives and children of ISIS members. The majority of the children are Syrian and Iraqi, but, including those from other camps and detention centers in the area, 8,000 hail from some 60 foreign countries. In the piercing cold wind, I met a Russian mother, who told me: "Please let them take my children, if they don't want to take me". Out of despair, she was ready to give up custody, as long as her children would be taken to safety. Repatriation efforts are slow, as many governments are still reluctant to bring them back, citing security risks and lack of a legislative framework. But in camps such as al-Hol, these women and children are exposed to an environment of violence and radicalization. Their miserable state reinforces the narrative of victimhood upon which most violent radical ideologies, such as ISIS, are based. They have been branded as children of ISIS even though they have not committed any crimes; in fact, half are under the age of five.
