One day I received a fax from a man who had read that I am a fan of photography, Hollywood photography to be exact. It read: Hi Brett Ratner,
Saw LA Times piece.
It occurred to me: This guy just might be tickled by my flick snaps of Hollywood’s Neanderthal 50s and might be demented enuff to piss away his hard earned $$ to buy one…My best hustle is to assert that the price structure would be considerably lower than that of the Liebovitz’s…
You’d have to adjust to the pain of living with something less than a Matisse…Phil Stern. I called him back immediately. My true appreciation for Phil’s photography began when I called Phil one day and invited him to the set of RUSH HOUR. He asked me what time we would be serving lunch, and he agreed to be there. As I stood on Hollywood Boulevard. I saw Phil walking down the middle of the street. As he got closer, I noticed something that made me so excited, I couldn’t believe my eyes. Phil had a camera around his neck! My mind started racing: Is there film in it? Would he actually take a picture of me on my set? Phil coming to the set with a camera to shoot me was like Picasso coming to the set with a paintbrush and canvas to paint me. I greeted him and played it very cool, trying to ignore the camera. I was in the middle of talking to Jackie Chan and Chris Tucker when I noticed out of the corner of my eye that Phil was raising his camera to his face. I immediately froze and couldn’t believe what I was seeing: the Phil Stern who photographed my heroes, Frank and Sammy, was actually going to take a picture of me. I became totally self-conscious, and to my dismay Phil dropped the camera from his face, hung his head in disappointment, and shuffled off. I fucked up. What did I do? Was it the way I looked? Was it the panic in my face, or had he just read my mind and could tell I was nervous? The disappointment was obvious in my face. Come on Brett, just be cool, I said to myself, and tried to go about my business. I decided I just had to ignore him. I climbed on top of a truck to show Jackie where I wanted him to land, blocking Phil from my vision. And then, when I least expected it, click. Oh my god, one Photo.
