(No, beignets are not vegan, but I like to try the food that’s native to the places I visit, regardless of whether they have meat or dairy in them. I’m an 80/20 kind of gal because that’s what works for me, mentally and physically.) Anyways, Luna had been cramped in the car for all that time, poor baby. She really is such a good girl. We did one quick night in Austin and then piled back in the car for an afternoon of driving Northeast to the Piney Woods @getawayhouse we rented for 2 nights. We looked at this as as opportunity to ground down, because until we got there, it felt like we’d been running from something—and in retrospect, perhaps we were. I love you Florida, but this gal has been craving open air, trees, and mountain scapes! 🌬🏔🚙 By the time we arrived to the remote woods, it was nightfall. We brought Luna inside the small cabin and Dago got to work on the fire right away. This was when we first encountered “cold” on the trip. It got down to the 30’s and was humid—still not used to the idea of humidity and cold associating with one another. Where I’m from, humid means hot and wet, not cold and bone chilling. ☃️ As I sat on the steps and watched Dago get the logs set up, curious little Luna peered out from the cabin. She quite literally had cabin fever before we even arrived. For those who don’t know, I found Luna—or rather, Luna found me—about 6 months ago outside of my apartment building. She spent the first 6 months of her life outside so she will always have a wild spirit about her. And I love that, but she had become an indoor cat, only venturing outdoors in my arms or a carrier. She joined me on the step, looking and sniffing around, and then quickly slipped between the steps, under the house. At first, I felt ok about it.
