A Nobel Peace Prize winner, human rights activist and the first black person to be appointed the Anglican Dean of Johannesburg in 1975. In this position, Desmond Tutu began to emerge as one of the most important voices in the South African anti-apartheid movement. In 1978, he was made general secretary of the South African Council of Churches, and as he continued to elevate himself in the South African religious hierarchy, he dedicated his voice and power to the advocation for an end to apartheid. In 1994, after South African apartheid finally did come to an end, Tutu was the archbishop who introduced the great President Mandela, my Tata, as the new president of South Africa, and the two worked to uncover and investigate the atrocities committed during the struggle over apartheid.
