Photo by @daisygilardini | By April the pack ice in the frozen fjords of Svalbard, Norway, is slowly opening up. This young bear is scouting the ice edge looking for seals.
Of the eight bear species, polar bears are the only bears that are truly carnivorous. They are at the top of the Arctic food chain, and seals represent 90 percent of their diet. As apex predators, polar bears are exposed to high levels of pollutants, which accumulate in the food chain. Therefore, they’re a good indicator of the health of the entire Arctic ecosystem.
