These fish weigh up to 2,200 pounds (1,000 kg) and can grow up to eight feet (about 2.5 meters) in diameter. They are an absolute riot to dive with, and I think they are gorgeous. Tragically, their mortality rate is high. Mola are frequent victims of driftnet fisheries; they get tangled in the line and drown. They also mistake plastic pollution floating in the open ocean for jellyfish and squid, their favorite foods.
