Coloradans are luckier than most, with easy access to the mountains and 22 million acres of public land. Our community often talks about how much we care about these lands and each other, but what’s the reality when these lands are overrun? We’ve all got cabin fever. We are all desperate to keep our sanity. This drives us outside, to local crags, to ‘obscure’ crags that are suddenly experiencing a new renaissance. These outdoor resources, already over-loved and overloaded, are more so now than ever. . I’ll be the first to admit that I’m part of that crowd. Just a few days ago, I posted a story supporting local outdoor climbing. I’ve climbed outside. But new data is emerging about the presence of COVID-19 on different surfaces. Studies have proven the most effective strategies are to truly just stay at home. Yet thousands of Front Range climbers are, understandably, seeking comfort in the outdoors that we love so much... It’s incredibly hard to reconcile. . Outdoor resources and public lands are one of many, many things to be concerned about right now. I’m honestly writing this to convince myself, and hopefully others, to stay away from all outdoor crags. We’re not perfect. But I know we can try to make decisions that we can look back on and be proud of. We’re taking steps in our own way. On this winding, uncertain path, let’s go in the direction that protects our lands and each other. .
