I met this beautiful hawksbill on a dive among the shallow coral reefs in Palau. Sea turtles spend most of their lives in the open ocean, migrating thousands of miles between foraging grounds and nesting grounds. This mother sea turtle is likely returning to the beaches where she was born to lay her eggs. When she's done, she will disguise her nest so well that it will be difficult to tell that she was ever there—except for tracks left on the way back to the sea. About two months later, when her tiny hatchlings crawl out of the sand, they will dash toward the brightest horizon while dodging predators.
